About
A betting line is not just a price. It is a forecast.
It takes everything the market thinks it knows about a game and compresses it into a number: how good the teams are, who is playing, how they match up, what the weather might do, and where the money is going.
When those expectations change, the line moves. An injury becomes public. A lineup comes out. A bettor with a strong opinion puts real money behind it. The market listens, argues, and settles on a new number.
And the market is very good at this. Not because it gets every game right. Upsets are part of sports. But across many games, its probabilities tend to hold up, which is why the closing line is so hard to beat.
The Story of the Line freezes that forecast before the game starts, then comes back after the result. What did the market see? What changed? Which expectations held up, and where did the line miss?
To explore those questions, the site turns six familiar sports takes into six forecasting models. Each one has a different idea about what matters. We run them against the closing market every day and grade every pick in public.
There is almost always something new to test. The seven leagues nearly tile the year between them, giving us a continuing cycle of forecasts, results, and another game tomorrow.
The sports calendar
Seven leagues nearly fill the sports year, so there is almost always a new forecast to make and an old one to grade.
The goal is not to turn every game into a bet. It is to use the line as evidence, test the stories we tell about sports, and find a new way of looking at teams, players, and the things that matter before a game begins.
Story of the Line is built and written by Paul Thibodeau, a cognitive scientist turned data scientist and sports fan. The models are ours. The odds come from third parties and may be stale.

Every game has a line.
Every line tells a story.
